Can you believe it is almost the end of our year in Kindergarten? We are starting our fourth quarter of learning and have a lot of things still left to learn before we move onto first grade! Below is a list of all of the different things that we will be working on this quarter until the end of the year. Please review so that you are aware of what we are working on in the classroom and different skills you can work on with your child at home. The words that are BOLDED are standards that we will have assessments for while the others will only need to be assessed once. Thanks again for all of your support at home! Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) is the practice of assigning a student to a higher-grade level than is typical, given the student's age, for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities. SSA is an accelerative practice that allows students to show mastery of the content of a course without having taken the course. For example, a parent could nominate his/her child to skip a grade level of content in either Language Arts OR Mathematics. The WCPSS Accelerative Practices website at http://wakeacceleration.weebly.com/ provides more information and answers to frequently asked questions.
Students who already participate in SSA math or ELA do not have to test again. Successful completion of their current math or ELA class will move them forward next year. Students cannot apply for SSA in more than one area... they can choose math OR English/Language Arts, but not both. There are nomination and testing windows for each track. Nomination forms will be available from the above website once the first nomination window opens for the district on April 8th. Nominations will be accepted for each track only during their specified nomination window and testing is scheduled for 1st through 5th graders according to the following dates. Students will be given 2 hours for testing. Parents of Kindergarten students will be given information about when their child will be assessed after the nomination period ends. Tracks 3 & 4 Nomination Window: May 12th to May 25th (All forms MUST be received by 5:00 p.m. on May 25th. Late nomination forms will not be accepted.) Morrisville's Anticipated Testing Dates: Monday, June 6th or Wednesday, June 8th (You will be notified of which testing date before the testing week) Hi Parents! We will be putting using our engineering skills and designing "Leprechaun Traps" using recycled items this Wednesday, March 16th. Please feel free to send in items tomorrow and/or Wednesday morning. Suggested items are: empty and rinsed milk cartons, juice boxes, plastic bottles, & containers, paper cups & bags, cardboard boxes, cereal boxes, tissues boxes, newspaper. Thanks and let me know if you have any questions! :) Leprechauns are witty and tricky, Or so we’ve been told! We plan to catch a leprechaun So he’ll give us all of his gold! We will build some traps that are clever and smart, They will surely be a work of art! When we have a wee little man, He will say we had the PERFECT plan. He will lead us to his pot of gold, And we will have treasure to last us until we’re old! It's about that time for the End of Year testing for our 3rd-5th grade students. During this time, the K-2 teachers and parents would like to provide them with some special treats to encourage the students and make them feel less nervous about the tests! Below is a sign-up genius for parents who would be willing to help out with providing some snacks for the treat bags. Please sign up if you are willing and able to help! There are a few slots still available, so please sign up if you can. Thanks so much for your support! Next week (14th-19th) we will be hosting our annual food drive to benefit Wake Relief Food Pantry in Raleigh. Wake Relief served over 50 schools in Wake County and 2,600 kids last year. Please bring in your non-perishable food items all next week before 9:15 to the front lobby. There will be an award for the grade level that brings in the most food. Also, each student that brings in at least 3 canned food items will get a free pass to go ice skating! Thank you for your support! Please contact Alison Bowman ([email protected] or 460-3393) if you have any questions. We have been learning all about different types of weather! We have learned about stormy weather, wind, temperature and all different important science weather tools that meterologists use!
We became meterologists in the classroom by observing clouds and what happens with a cloud gets full of water, what will happen? We discovered that it will start to rain! We used our magnifying glasses and watched as the rain started to come out of our "clouds!" How exciting?! We are super excited to continue learning about weather and will end our unit by this week. I hope that your child can share what they have learned with you at home! |
